Dress Pants Improvements

handmade gray dress pants for a preschool boy (13)This past weekend, I had the little ring bearer try on the dress pants I made for him. (The wedding is next Sunday.)
Since the fitting pictures I shared a few weeks ago, I found out that he GREW!
Guess I shouldn't be surprised. Kids do that.

I had to make some alterations…

…which resulted in even better-fitting pants!

The pants were just a smidge too short. So I added cuffs. handmade gray dress pants for a preschool boy (9)handmade gray dress pants for a preschool boy (11)
And I reworked the waist to make it only elastic in the back. This added a little room to a
slightly-too-tight behind.

Whew! Glad I had time to adjust them. They fit better now (you might remember that I said they ‘just’ fit!) And they are really cute. I can’t believe how well they fit.

  1. Nice! You asked in your other post about any free patterns for boys pants. I haven't found one besides the MADE pants, but Little Nowhere Man pants (by Shwin&Shwin) are pretty similar and they are only like $6 or so. I got mine when they were having a sale. I also would recommend the book Sewing for Boys. I think it was about $16 on Amazon, but I've gotten so much use out of it that each pattern works out to just a few cents apiece. I just made another pair of their Little Heartbreaker Pants (see them at http://willyount.blogspot.com/2012/07/crazy-pants-or-ugly-little-heartbreaker.html).

    1. Thanks for the comment! I tend to avoid buying patterns, mostly because I always think I'll never use them...but then when the mood strikes to sew something, I realize I should've planned ahead.

I am going to consider buying the Sewing for Boys book b/c I am realizing that I am able to make clothes that actually fit my very tall, slim 3 year old. I'm realizing that yes, it takes work, but when I take my time, I can sew well-fitting, well-made clothing! And it is fun. Thanks for the suggestion. I will check out your Heartbreaker pants!
